How It Works

Who is The Art of Equal Pay initiative for?

Anyone that supports this cause can pledge. However, we are specifically asking artists, gallery owners and collectors to endorse the effort by raising prices and purchasing artwork at more equitable rates.

What’s in it for me?

Supporting gender and racial equity! Closing the gender pay gap for visual artists. We believe that not only will female artists benefit, but, as with so many bias issues, society as a whole will become healthier and happier. We will also build economic stability for individual artists and their families. And supporters will become part of an art world movement that lifts up women and female-identifying creatives.

Why did you pick 15%

The pay gap for artists ranges from 14-19%, The National Endowment for the Arts reports that among full-time artists women earn .81 for every dollar earned by men. The American Association of University Women, the nation’s leading voice promoting equity for women and girls, puts the wage gap for artists at 14%. We picked 15% as a realistic number that would have a sizable impact in addressing existing equities.

What happens after March 15th?

The campaign continues. We will be orchestrating, following and highlighting several transactions and activities on March 15th, but this is an ongoing effort. We all know that this problem won’t be fixed in a day.

Can I remove my name from the pledge?

Yes, of course. Pledging is completely voluntary, and anyone can change their mind at any time. Just send us an email, and we’ll remove your name from the list.

Who gets the additional 15%?

The value of the artwork is increased by 15% making the artwork closer in price to male artists prices. The 15% is split between the artist and the gallery in the customary fashion.

Does it cost to pledge?

There is no cost to sign up.

Do I have to give you my email?

No, but please do if you want to get occasional updates on our progress.

Who else has pledged?

We are publishing a list on this site. If you prefer, you can choose to remain anonymous when you fill out the short pledge form. We’ll simply add your pledge to the total count but won’t identify you by name.

Can I talk to someone about this initiative?

Of course. Reach us via email:  theartofequalpay@gmail.com
